Puppies can weigh anywhere from 4 ounces (one fourth of a pound) to 32 ounces (2 pounds). There are odd situations and special breeds that may deliver puppies weighing even less or more than those ranges, but the 4-32 ounce range of birth weights is fairly average. I am a breeder of Olde English Bulldogges, and my particular breed births puppies in the range of 6 ounces on the small side to 16 ounces on the large side, with 8-10 ounces being the norm.

A Mom could die if she had a puppy or a placenta stuck still inside her and was not brought to the vet to have it removed. A puppy sometimes dies after birth, it is called "fading puppy" and it is thought that there is something wrong with the puppy and it is natures way of taking care of it.
