The issue in the civil war is Slavery. I don't believe racism (as in Hitler's Arian race supremacy) is the issue. Although there were some religious under(over?)tone (God approves slavery), Abraham Lincoln, being an Atheist chose to follow the dictates of his conscience and acted to stop the practice of slavery.
