During World War II, Germany was unable to conquer the Soviet Union for several reasons. First, the Soviet Union's inherent strengths and resources were far greater than Germany had estimated. Second, Germany's strength was spread out among several different fronts, while all of the Soviet strength was concentrated against Germany. Third, the Soviet Union received vitally important aid from America and Great Britain that enabled it to grow in military effectiveness with each new year of the war.

  • Hitler micromanaged the Operation Barbarossa when he should have left the fighting and strategy to the top Generals. Hitler was a military idiot.
  • Hitler failed to supply the troops with extremely warm clothing, food, medication, ammo, planes, fuel, and whatever else they needed. He demanded they fight to the death with what they had. He let them starve to death.
  • They had to surrender to survive. Out of about 100,000 or less Nazi troops only 5000 ever made it back alive to Germany after the war.
  • The German Nazis misjudged the Red Army's capability and the amount of troops and equipment they had.
  • The Reds had very good snipers and troops. Stalin let the Generals do the fighting and strategy.
  • The Reds cut off supply lines and let old man winter do its damage on the Nazis.

Germany did not prepare for a long war. It did not replace its losses in the 1941 campaign, nor in later years. The Germany Army shrank in size & in offensive capability. The German Army did not sufficiently increase the mobility of its infantry & artillery units. The mobile Panzer units were too few in numbers & not accompanied by mobile (& armored artillery & infantry) in the numbers necessary to win. Finally, Hitler & his German Generals had no real concept on how to actually defeat the Soviet Union. Seizing Moscow would not cause the defeat of the USSR, unlike the defeat of France that was quickly brought about by the capture of Paris.

Why didn't the Soviet Union take over all of Germany instead of putting up the Berlin wall?

After WWII the partitioning of Germany was agreed on by all the Allied powers. The Soviet Union was mostly uninterested in Western Europe, and they had been partitioned East Germany by everyone else. Taking over all of Germany would be an act of war which would sour relations with the Allies.

What was at stake in the battle of kursk?

Taking place in the summer of 1943, the Battle of Kursk held high stakes for the two combatants, Germany and the Soviet Union. If Germany won it, they would once again retain the initiative on the Eastern Front and perhaps even knock the Soviet Union out of the war. If the Soviet Union won it, they would finally capture the initiative for the front and be in position to conduct their first all-out offensive of the war.

What was the Soviet Union trying to accomplish with the Berlin blockade?

The Soviet Union was hoping to drive the western allies out of Berlin, so they could occupy the whole city which was located 128 miles deep inside East Germany. The Soviet Union never like the arrangement after World War II to have the city of Berlin divided among the allied governments. I also think that the Soviets felt they deserved to occupy the entire city because of the tremendous losses they suffered taking Berlin from the Nazis. Over 300,000 Russians were killed taking the city.
