World War 1 was about economic rivalry between the great powers of the time - Great Britain and Germany. Germany controlled much of the trade on continental Europe, while Great Britain controlled much of the overseas trade. Because Germany saw little opportunity for growth in its trade with its European neighbours, it sought to expand its interests overseas, a move that Great Britain resisted. Gradually, hostilities built up, until war was inevitable. A minor theatre of war was the attack on Islamic Turkey, but this occured for strategic reasons and was unrelated to any religious differences. In summary, religion was not an important cause of the First World War and played little part in its execution.

∙ 13y agoReligion wasn't an issue in World War One, it was more to do with rivalries between the European powers which were triggered into war, some would say almost by accident, because of a number of treaties in which various countries agreed to defend each other if attacked.
No doubt soldiers, sailors and airmen on both sides were fervently prayng to their chosen god at times, such as just before the whistles blew ordering them to go 'over the top'. Most were Christians of various denominations, plus mostly Muslims from the then Turkish Ottoman Empire and south-eastern parts of the then Austro-Hungarian Empire (both sided with Germany), and a mixture of Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs from India (which then included present day India, Pakistan & Bangladesh) in the British Colonial army and Muslims from North Africa in the French Colonial army on the other side.

Jews practiced their religion quite openly during World War 1 in most countries where Jews lived. In Czarist Russia, there were some difficulties in practicing Judaism, but elsewhere it was not an issue. It was during World War 2 that being Jewish became an issue.

The cause of World War 1 was a visit to Serbia from Austria's Archduke where he was assassinated by one of the many angry Serbians who were mistreated by the Austrian Government who enforced higher taxes to pay for churches. So Austria invaded Serbia angering other countries which turned into everyone picking sides and fighting each other. So technically religion was a root cause of World War 1. And World War 2 was also mainly caused by religion. Primarily Catholicism cause these wars. Just like most wars, World War 1 was started by religion.
