To change the valve cover gaskets on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier 2.2L, disconnect the battery cables. Then use a wrench to loosen the valve cover bolts. Remove the old gasket from the cover and the manifold using a cleaner designed for this purpose (found at automotive parts stores). Put adhesive on the manifold, and valve cover. Line with a new gasket on the valve cover and replace the valve covers. Tighten the bolts and re-connect the battery.
On 4 cylinder it takes about 20-30 minutes. For V-6 it might take couple hours.
# The PCV valve is located in the valve cover # Detach the hose from the valve then unscrew the valve from the valve cover
The PCV valve for a 1998 Monte Carlo should plug into the valve cover. Twist and pull it to remove and replace it.

Valve cover, oil pan, intake, exhaust, etc
Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs, then remove the large nuts (30mm) around them that hold the valve cover down. If the valve cover is stuck, knock it loose, gently, with a rubber mallet or wood block. Remove the old gasket and spark plug tube seals from the valve cover. Clean all mating surfaces, including the top edge of the cylinder head, and place the new gaskets/seals where the old ones were. Place the valve cover back on the head, tighten the nuts down on the spark plug tubes, and place the plug wire ends on the same spark plugs they came from.
sure. i have. is it fun? no. is it easy? no. does it take a long time? yup. might as well do the valve cover gaskets while you are that far in to it. which will make it a REALLY suck job.

We found the the valve cover had a bad gasket. We had to replace ours and that solved that problem.
