The scion of one of the oldest aristocratic families in Virginia, Robert E. Lee was a West Point graduate who served with distinction as an Army Engineer and aide to Winfield Scott in the Vera Cruz Campaign of the Mexican War, mentioned in numerous dispatches. At the beginning of the Civil War, Scott offered him command of all the Union forces, but Lee resigned his commission rather than take arms against his native state, Virginia. First serving as Davis' military adviser, Davis gave Lee command of the Army of Northern Virginia when Joesph E. Johnson got wounded. Lee then led a series of spoiling offensives against a series of Union generals until, in 1864, Grant was put in charge of all Union forces. In April of 1865, Lee surrendered to him at Appomattox. After the war, he became president of Washington College and died in 1870. The college is now Washington and Lee University. His wife's home, Arlington, is now the National Military Cemetery.
