As soon as Rome began expanding and acquiring territory and administrating Roman law to its acquisitions, it became an empire. What is mistakenly called the "Roman Empire" by some people today, is actually the principate. This came into being at the end of the republic.

The term empire can be confusing because historians use it to refer to the period of rule by an emperor which followed the Republic However, the Roman Empire started during Republic. Many of the conquests occurred in this period and the Republic already had an empire.
