This question is phrased in such a way that it asks for opinions.

Opinion #1

I believe GM foods should continue to be researched, grown, produced and utilized. But I believe just as strongly that it needs to continue to be done with strong government oversight based on good, solid science. I don't think we will be able to feed all the projected number of people in the world without them.

Opinion 2:

Isn't that being done already?? It's hard to say it isn't when all the GMO crops in the US are patented to Monsanto, corn and soybeans particularly. All of these crops are harvested and put into the food chain and used by people, even if most people, even those who oppose GMO foods, don't realize it. These GMO crops are getting more difficult to get rid of if anybody has the right mind to do so because they're so wide spread. If someone attempted to grow an "organic" field of corn next to a field of Monsanto's GMO corn, that "organic" corn would no longer be organic because wind and insects are more than likely going to move the pollen from the GMO corn to the non-GMO corn and make it into....you guessed it....GMO corn. Then Monsanto's going to come after the person growing and storing the organic corn and reseeding it next year because they think that they're trying to take the patent rug from under their feet when in fact the organic corn producer had no control over the pollen that spread from the GMO corn to the "organic" corn.

That being said, there is no stopping the production of GMO crops even if you agree to this question or not. GMO corn and soybeans are already being fed to consumers, and no other types of corn and soybeans can compete with the quality and consistency of these types of scientifically modified plants. I think we have no choice but to accept the fact that GMO foods are here to stay, and are being and will continue to be a utilized as a source of food.

Why are things gentically modified?

There are many answers to your question, but they can all be summed up to this one answer: Things are genetically modified to increase monetary profit margins. You should next ask how will this modified food affect us all biologically.

What are genetically modified tomatoes?

genetically modified tomatoes are exactly what the name implies i.e tomatoes which have been genetically modified. if you want to know what genetic modification is you should not have said your question is different then "what is a genetically modified organism" to my knowledge there are no commercial varieties of genetically modified tomatoes available right now but i know they are working on: roundup ready tomatoes, brackish water tomatoes and varies disease immunities.

Should genetically modified organisms require labels?

A large percentage of consumers believe GMO foods should be labeled. Most are not aware that some pharmaceutical medicines are produced from GMOs or that cross-pollination has resulted in organic and non-GMO foods often having a small percentage of GMOs.

Is it acceptable to genetically modify animals in order to produce enough cheap meat to feed the growing population?

There are certainly those who believe that it is immoral to eat animals, but even if that were true, there does not seem to be any reason why it would be more offensive to eat genetically modified animals than it is to eat the animals that we already have (which are also highly modified by millennia of selective breeding, from their original state in the wild). I can think of a number of reasons why the world's growing population should eat a vegetarian diet rather than eating animals, genetically modified or not. However, I would not say that genetic modification is unacceptable. I will accept it.

Should Genetically Modifing foods continue?

What does Genetically Modified mean?

Gene splicing or hybrid species are both genetically modified. *That is true, but there are two distinct kinds of genetic modification. Hybrids are modified by crossing one variety with another within the same species. For example, a Rutgers tomato is crossed with a Big Boy tomato to make a better variety of tomato. Another form of genetic modification is called bioengineering. Unlike hybrids, this type of genetic modification is done by splicing genes from one species into those of an entirely different species. This type of gene splicing has been done to certain vegetables since, I believe, the 1970s. An example is bacteria or virus genes that have been spliced into corn. This type of modification has been done with tomatoes, soybeans, potatoes, and other vegetables, as well as some varieties of trees. From what I have read, the goal is not to make a better variety, but to make the variety more tolerant of chemicals or, in the case of trees, to make their structure weaker to make them more suitable for paper-making. An organic grower most often uses heirloom varieties that have not been genetically modified, either by hybridization or bioengineering. In fact, most of the organic growers I know are vehemently opposed to any kind of bioengineered organisms and have organized to oppose such practices. When something is modified by genetics, it means that it has been altered on a genetic level. Everything is made up of genes, including us. Some foods are altered genetically to help it be resistant to diseases.
