This is an opinion question, so my answer will respond in kind. It is my view that the primary language of a country should be the language spoken by the majority of its citizens. If there are sizable majorities and minorities for multiple languages, then there should be multiple national languages. I feel the the US is a bit backward, being that we are one of the few countries left that had not made more that one language its national language when we at least have a minority of some size, the Hispanics who speak spanish as a language. As it stands now the majority of Americans speak English, which is why it should stay a national language. However, I do feel spanish should be added to the official language list considering the number of people, legal and illegal who speak it in the US.

Spanish will ultimately become the second official language of the U.S., like French became the second official language of Canada, not for historical reasons but because of Demographics and politics.

I do not think Spanish has a high enough population versus the English speakers to have Spanish be considered as an official language. There are about 300,000,000-305,000,000 English speaking Americans. There are only about 11,000,000 Spanish speaking Americans. (Both these figures include native and second language speakers)

I think not, English definitely needs to be official though. It is spoken by over 6/7 of the population!

Arguments can be made on both sides of the question, but in my opinion one of the best argumants against an "official language" is that it would introduce expense, but have little or no practical effect. Information is still going to be produced in other languages. People who speak other languages will continue to do so. Government would be forced to implement at least some rules, establish monitoring agencies, hire bueurocrats, and mildly traumatize people, all with no noticeable effect.

It should. It would give the state a little more money. Not to mention that it would reduce the number of illegal immigrants.

For most of the colonists, English was their native language because they or their families were originally from England. It wasn't a matter of "official"--it was just what they spoke.

Because the U.S. does not have any official language. It has never seemed important enough to the people to create an official language.
