Should we lower the drinking age back to 18?

3 - In the 1970's many states did lower the drinking age to 18. The result was a dramatic increase in alcohol related deaths and injuries, mainly due to driving under the influence. With in a very few number of years those states with a drinking age of 18 to 20 bowed to new federal legislation - making the legal drinking age 21, nation wide.

Since that time science has proved that the human brain does not finish maturing until age 21 to 23. This explains in uncertain language why young men and women make choices that others would call "risky" at best.

2 - At age 18, people are legal adults. As much as their parents may think otherwise, they are no longer children. They have the right to vote and help choose the President of the United States. They can go to war to defend our country, and they can legally purchase guns and cigarettes. It is absolutely absurd that they cannot have a beer or glass of wine without fear of possible arrest and prosecution.

1 - Well if we lower it more and more teens would start drinking then already do and parents wont be able to control them.

Depending upon the maturity level, drinking could be lowered to 18 since this is the age where you graduate from high school therefore giving you the freedom to act as you will. Yet on the other hand, 21 ensures that you've matured enough to be responsible for your actions. You, by this time, should have obtained at the least an undergraduate degree showing you are a person with moral values. All in all, it depends on how you act before and after consumption of an alcoholic beverage.

The drinking age is 21. Even if it was 18, no, that's a completely idiotic idea to lower the drinking age to 16. High schoolers aren't ready for the responsibilities of being able to control alcohol consumption for themselves & their peers.

This subject is going to be disputed as long as there are people both above and below age 21. The reason it was lowered for a period of time was because during the Vietnam War it was said that young men were able to fight and die for their country but weren't able to drink, which changed the law. This stayed for a bit, until they noticed the trend of people in the 18-20 age category having a drastic increase in alcohol related accidents and deaths causing the law to be changed back. Now personally I don't believe there should be an age requirement, but that there should be a maturity and capability test instituted. I know many people over 21 that should NOT be able to drink and many people (even some who are under 18) able to handle it in a responsible way, although they can't legally partake.

No. There are already too many deaths of young people due to their illegal use of alcohol and drugs. Making it legal will only increase the numbers that die.
