If the interviewer asks you if he/she can contact this employer for a reference you should be prepared to say "yes" or "no" with a brief explanation or qualifier if you're not sure what the employer will say about you.

Yes. Your employer will usually look for reference and find out if you were fired so you should be the one that tells him or her. You should also explain why you got fired and tell that you feel you did or did not deserve to get fired. Then your employer will make the impression that you are honest and wont hide anything.
