You should ignore them completely if they whine. They whine because they want attention, and by telling them they're okay, you're giving them what they want. When they're quiet, that's when you should talk to them and tell them they're good etc.

You can try covering his crate with a sheet, give him a quiet kiss on the head, tell him goodnight and DO NOT GO BACK!!! You can even try a nightlight if he seems worse in the dark. Trust me a few nights of ignoring him and he WILL settle down.
