Generally warmth is the suggested method for finding relief from inflammation in the case of gout it is definitely best to steer away from cold as uric acid crystals tend to form more effectively in colder situations. In the case of Rheumatoid arthritis cold followed by warmth can be a very effective way to get temporary relief from pain. These methods however do not get to the root of the problem and will have no effect on the cause of the inflammation
Its not the best thing, but it is one of the many things that can feel good on a joint affected by RA. Somethings that are better than a cold compress are a heating pad, a warm bath or spa, rest, elevating the joint with a pillow and staying off of joint or limiting the use for a while and keeping it wrapped or in a brace while using joint until the swelling or discomfort is eased.

Always use ice for the first 48 hours after a new injury. Heat might sometimes feel better, but it doesn't help with inflammation from the injury, so it doesn't promote healing. Even an old injury that shows signs of inflammation should be cold instead of heat. When it is an old or reoccurring injury (called chronic), heat is more help. If your back gets stiff from where you pulled it a few months ago, heat will help to loosen it up and ease the ache.
I use cold...15 minutes of ice--covered with a towel so there is not direct contact with my skin. You can also alternate heat and cold. I agree -- Ice. Recent studies show that heat doesn't really seem to reduce inflamation much at all, even if it can help with muscle aches.

Usually cold, you can get creams for it, but you can also alternate between the two

A diesel engine uses the heat of compressing air to ignite the fuel instead of a spark plug like a gas engine. When it is cold it takes a bit to get enough heat to get it to fire. Ford diesels use a glow plug to heat the air when cold starting, but on a Cummins they don't use them. A simple block heater should make it easier to start when it is cold.
I have just learned that if you have an infection you should NOT use heat. The reason being is that it draws the infection out, and encourages it to spread. Cold is the way to go if you are going to use a compress (although it may be difficult. I know that a warm compress has helped me more than a cold compress.)
Post cosmetic surgery you should use warm compress. My mother just had a breast reduction and was instructed to use a warm compress. Cold compress is to reduce swelling or inflammation after an injury like a spained ankle. Wish you the best in the healing process.
