The ancestors of Siamese cats come from Thailand. Modern Thai "alley cats" are very similar to the Siamese breed, and were bred with the Siamese to produce the "Traditional/Old-Style Siamese", otherwise known as the Thai cat.

The Siamese cat is originally from Southeast Asia, Thailand specifically. They were first exported from the country in the late eighteenth century. Their name makes a lot more sense when you consider that Thailand was known as Siam up until 1939.
