First define small wars. During the Vietnam War, OVER 7 million tons of bombs were dropped on the enemy; in WWII only 2+ million tons of bombs were dropped on the enemy.
In Vietnam, the US lost OVER 5,000 helicopters destroyed, and OVER 2,000 jets & other fixed-wing aircraft were lost. Of course, then, there's the 300,000 wounded and 58,000 dead GI's.
So, define "small wars."
We can, notwithstanding "small wars", address Afghanistan. President Bush Jr. declared a "Global War On Terrorism" in 2001, after terrorists attacked New York City in the US on September 11, 2001. Terrorists in Afghanistan were alleged to have been linked to that attack, that's why the US is there...HUNTING them down.
Even though the word or term WAR sells, and everybody wants to be a "war vet"; Afghanistan is HUNTING terrorists...NOT German Soldiers (WWII), Italian Soldiers (WWII), Confederate Soldiers (Civil War), Union Soldiers (Civil War), North Vietnamese Soldiers (Vietnam War), or any other soldiers that US troops have fought in the past. Terrorists (criminals) are not "supposed" to be treated like Prisoners of War (POW), they are NOT soldiers...if they are...then whose their President? Where's their capital? Where's their Air Force? Or Navy? Or Marine Corps? What jets do they fly? What does their flag look like? What country are they from? What's the name of their country?
The Vietnam War, like WWII, like WWI, like the Spanish-American War of 1898, like the Korean War, etc. have all been fought against a NATION (COUNTRY) which flew a flag. Afghanistan, like Iraq, is a law enforcement issue. Find em, arrest em (or terminate em), try them in court, and execute the sentence. The Coalition didn't issue WANTED posters for nothing!
When Afghanistan jet fighters are fighting US jet fighters. When Afghanistan tanks are fighting US tanks. When Afghanistan warships are fighting US warships. When Afghanistan soldiers are fighting US soldiers. Then it will be like Vietnam. Right now, it just a law enforcement issue; finding terrorists, arresting them, or terminating them.
The Vietnam War, like Korea, WWII, WWI, were largely fought by conscripted (drafted) men. Desert Storm, and the current Irag conflict has been fought by an all volunteer military. The fact is that the majority of us that served in Vietnam, were RA (enlisted), especially in the early years,1960-1967. At wars end,the DoD stated that 54% of Vietnam Vets, were volunteers. A questionare was sent to Vietnam vets asking if they would do it again and 75% answered YES,even knowing the end result. So please get facts before posting. Vietnam was NOT largely fought by Draftees but volunteers. The ones that were drafted, fought and died as valorous as any troops of any war and that too is a fact.
North Vietnam's prison for US POW's? Or South Vietnam prisons for communist POWs?
Vietnam. Yes the yanks did get smashed by peasants, but as this ruined the entire country of Vietnam, no other country wanted to be like Vietnam.
Afghanistan
