SunRay Engineering manufactures an outstanding solar powered pool pump system. See it at SunRayUS.com.
The benefits of a solar powered pump include an decrease in electrical usage and better energy consumption.
Your pool pump needs to be pushing the water through your solar system
Have a solar powered water pump will save you on energy cost. You can order one online at www.siliconsolar.com.

Pool Pumps are designed and built to work hard. You may create some additional back pressure by adding solar panels. as long as the pump is sufficient to fill the solar panels with water you should have no harm done by adding solar to your pool
Installing a solar powered water pump at a a high point on your property, above many of the trees will be effective.
solar heating for pools is very efficient, it heats the pool with a natural resource that comes to us for free, and the only bill you will get is for the pump to circulate the water, but the pump is already going as it cleans the pool anyways.
Use a gas-powered or solar-powered pump, though the solar-powered pump may prove to be more expensive in the long-run than a gas-powered pump. Also, consider a gravity-flow if the trough is located down-hill from the creek. If you have enough water flow in the creek, you can use a hydraulic ram/ "Clacker" pump. These use no external power and few moving parts - they will work for *years* without maintenance. Look for: hydraulic ram on Wikipedia.
Solar panels produce DC voltages. I presume that your pool pump uses 120 volts AC. Find the amperage of the pump. Find out what the output current of a single solar cell produces. Divide this into the pump amperage. If the output voltage is 12 VDC then you will need at least 10 cells to start. The total current of these 10 cells will have to be greater that the pump motor nameplate. Now you will have to purchase an inverter to change the DC to AC.
A solar water pump, is basically like any other pump, accept that it is powered by a battery. Solar Panels use photovoltaic cells to charge the batteries, which in turn charge the pump. Water is then pumped from either an underground well, aquifer, or even aquitard. That water can be pumped, depending on the power level, to the surface or to a reservoir tower that feeds a system of pipes.

The size of your filter limits the size of the pump, a 1 hp sta rite dura glas is great pump a 1hp should do you . If you have solar 1 1/2 hp is needed to push the water up on the roof.
