Most important thing I will ever tell you, vote with what you believe. Do not ever vote against your candidate even if they are not going to win. People offten say that voting for a third party (one that's not republican or democrat) is a wasted vote, but in reality voting for something you don't believe in is a wasted vote.
Other wise, check out all the major parties I am a member of the Libertarian Party because I belive in true freedoms. Here's a basic break down of the three biggest parties.
Democrats - are socially and economically liberal. they believe that we should all be free to make our own decisions (such as our sexual prefference and what we wear), but also believe that society has an obligation to the not so fortunate. This is where the wellfare system comes in. They believe in high spending, which leads to high taxes.
Republicans - are socially and economically conservative. They believe in traditional values (ie. no gay marriage) and that society does not have an obligation to the not so fortunate. A conservative government should spend less and thus tax less.
Libertarians - Socially liberal, economically conservative. We belive that we are free to make our own decisions. Also we want to bring government spending to a minimum and thus minimize taxes.
