Northerners were called the Union. Southerners were called the Confederacy.
because they are ignorant.
They chose moderates to lead them so as to win support from Southerners who were unsure about splitting from the Union.
The Confederacy
They did not recognise the Confederacy as a sovereign nation. They regarded it as a collection of states in rebellion against the US IMPROVEMENT .....and they called them "rebels" or "Johnny Reb" or "Goddamn secessionists"
Because the Southerners pretty much made a confederacy, breaking away from the Union. Another reason is that the South had slaves, the Union did not

Many southerners hoped dependence on cotton would force great Britain to formally reconize the confederacy as an independent nation.
They supported the confederacy.
They thought Britain would be pleased to seeAmerica, its fast-growing economic rival, split into two. And they knew that France was wanting influence in Mexico, and it would suit them if Mexico's next-door neighbour, the Confederacy was pro-French.
The Confederacy named moderate Jefferson Davis its president.
