high blood pressure
With two Numbers systolic pressure over the diastolic pressure
A good blood pressure reading for the average person is Less than 120 for the systolic (top) number and less than 80 for the diastolic (bottom) number). Blood pressures between 140-150 systolic and 90-99 diastolic are considered to be Stage 1 high blood pressure. A systolic reading of 160 or higher and a diastolic of 100 or higher is considered to be Stage 2 High Blood Pressure. Higher numbers than those are considered to be a crisis and can be life threatening.
The systolic is high but the diastolic is normal. This means that your arteries are not stiff, but your heart was beating a little harder than normal. This could be due to you smoking, drinking coffee/tea or just being nervous before the BP was taken.
Hypertension- high blood pressure. (Hypotension- low blood pressure) High blood pressure is the pressure that is placed in your arteries when the heart pumps your blood. High blood pressure is an above average pressure that could eventually lead to things like strokes or heart attacks. Blood pressure is broke down by systolic and diastolic. Systolic readings are normally the higher of the two pressures when getting your blood pressure taken. If your systolic is lower than your diastolic then you probably aren't reading this and maybe in the hospital or even dead. Diastolic is the pressure left over in the arterie after the heart refills for another pump. Giving you a lower reading. Normal blood pressure should range around 140/80. If it is higher than that it would be a good idea to start an exercise program and diet.
Blood pressure of 140/73 might not require medication, but it does require some attention. Some simple lifestyle alterations, such as a minor change to your diet, or slightly adjusting your exercise routine could be all you need. Run "high blood pressure" through your favourite search engine. You'll come up with plenty of information. Check your blood pressure regularly at one of those machines you often see in drug stores, and have your doctor check it a few times a year as well.
It depends on the person's baseline reading. Though I don't think people stroke out really until their systolic is about 200. Over time, however, a high blood pressure will cause the heart to have to work really hard to push blood out and will dilate the heart causing cardiomyopathy.
If you systolic (top number) bp is greater than 180 and/or diastolic (bottom number) is greater than 110 you should seek emergency care. -LPN 6 yrs

This is considered a high reading as your systolic should be at least under 140 and ideally under 120 mmHg. Blood pressure readings do vary a lot and also the relationship between the higher and lower numbers can change. Therefore when you measure your BP again the readings may both be normal, or they could both be raised or it might be similar to now. Taking a number of measurements over time will give you a better picture as to whether this is a one-off or not. If it persists as it is, with only the systolic number raised, you still have hypertension (though to be terminologically precise you have Isolated Systolic Hypertension). It still needs to be controlled and you should follow the usual advice - that is to try lifestyle changes first.
There are many reasons one could have high blood pressure. Being overweight, and kidney disease are just two explanations. It is best to consult your doctor. Chronic high blood pressure is known as the silent killer because if it isn't treated it can lead to all sorts of problems like heart disease. Well it mean that when your heart pump the blood it's putting too much pressure through the arteries than it normally is. which is bad for your body.
