The thirteen colonies in North America that became the first 13 states of the United States, were colonies of the English Crown.
Following the landing of John Cabot in North America in 1497, the English monarchy was determined to colonize the New World. In 1607 they founded Jamestown (in modern Virginia), which marked the establishment of the first colony. In 1732, the colony of Georgia (named after King George II) became the last of the 13 colonies to be founded.
The original thirteen Colonies were ruled by Great Britain. This changed in 1776 when we declared our independence. After the Revolutionary War, we formed the United States of America and became a democratic republic.
The colonists came from Great Britain (mostly from England). The land area of the colonies was used by Native Americans, who had a great sense that they belonged to the land and that they should look after it in harmony with Nature. They might not have understood the concept that the the land 'belonged' to them, in the way that European nations carved up land between them and drew borders on maps.
