When electricity was first being used, there were only local power lines which produced a wide variety of frequencies and voltages. Light bulbs were about the only electrical equipment that would be usable on every system. An electric motor would run at different speeds in different towns. As the grids grew and interconnected, things had to be standardized. No one in the Americas needed to coordinate with anyone in Europe or Asia because they would NEVER be interconnected! So here, we developed a standard of 120V/60H while they settled on 240V/50H.
