∙ 8y agoThe Battle of Wilson's Creek was between secessionists in the Missouri State Guard and Union forces under Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon, on August 10, 1861. The union forces attacked but were outmaneuvered, and Lyon was killed. The Confederate forces failed to defeat the Union forces, but compelled them to withdraw. The Union retreat meant Confederate sympathizers controlled southern Missouri, and did so throughout much of the the Civil War.
In a certain way, the Battle of Wilson's Creek was look into what the US Civil War would be like. Missouri was a hotly contested Border state that was also a slave state. US General Lyon led his troops into a Confederate force much larger than his 5,400 troops. The Confederate force was approximately 11,000. Both sides had high casualties, and in the course of battle the first Union general was killed. General Lyon was courages, however, he was out manned.
It could have been very significant if the Confederates chased the Union troops into Missouri, however, they were not equipped to delve deeper into Missouri.
