It was a nativist American political party opposed to Immigration, especially Irish immigrants, as they were Catholic and would be ruled by the Pope, and against anything they felt was un-American. They were a semi secret party, hence the name. When anyone asked them about their beliefs, they would repy, "I know nothing."
