The check engine light won't go off but I'm quite sure nothing is wrong how do you get it to go off?

this recently happened to our '96. First suspect gas cap left off and/or loose while refilling at gas pump or even after driving. Good answer was go to Murrays Auto Supply or Autozone for FREE code check and reset (Ohio resident). Next time or other reason it happened the O2 sensor was fried because it was too close to catalytic converter (engineering problem and/or recall issue). Good luck will watch for future posts. Go to a place like advance auto, they will scan it for free. Then you can post the code and let someone tell you what is wrond with the car.

My check engine light came on because the terminals were not connected tightly. no. quite the contrary. if you have a "check engine" light on, disconnecting, or in this case replacing the battery will turn it off. you have a different problem.

There are quite a few possibilities, but if the check engine light is on the computer has stored an error code. Use a code reader to find out what the error is then you'll have a pretty good idea what's wrong.

ANSWER I had this happen for quite some time, always had a diagnostic test come back clean. I was confused for some time, but found out that it was coming on because the gas cap wasn't tightened enough. Check to make sure it's on tight, or your check engine light will stay on if it isn't. This was an easy fix. I always check the minor things before thinking it's something major, because most of time it has been little things.
