The Gulf War (1990-1991) included Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, and was fought to liberate the country of Kuwait on the Persian Gulf.

Kuwait had been occupied by the forces of Iraq, then ruled by Saddam Hussein. Claiming that Kuwait was historically part of Iraq, Saddam ordered the invasion and occupation of the country in August, 1990. A coalition of forces led by the US expelled the Iraqis between January 17 and February 28, 1991.
