Russians
In the late 1950s the Soviet Union appeared to be winning the Space Race. They launched the first earth satellite and put the first human, Yuri Gagarin, in space.
The Soviet Union was the first to launch a successful artificial satellite (Sputnik, 1957), the first to put a man in space (Yuri Gagarin, 1961), and the first to successfully land a spacecraft on another planet, Venus (Venera 7, 1970).
Sputnik 1 was the first Earth-orbiting artificial satellite and launched by by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957. It was the first in a series of satellites collectively known as the Sputnik program.
Launching of Sputnik
The first artificial Earth satellite launched by the United States was "Explorer I". It was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Friday, January 31, 1958 at 10:48 PM Eastern time. The payload was assembled in 84 days and the Vanguard rocket modified to launch it. America had been 'burned' by the October, 1957 launch of the Russian "Sputnik I" (as well as two more satellites in late 1957), and was eager to put a satellite in orbit. Explorer 1 weighed less than 30 pounds. It carried a few scientific experiments and two radio transmitters to send the results back to earth. The experiments and radios were battery-powered since solar power in space was not yet developed. Explorer 1 went silent on May 23, 1958 and burned up on re-entry March 31, 1970.

That was Sputnik
Russia (Then known as USSR ) was the first to put it's satellite (called "Sputnik") into orbit. The date was 4 October 1957. "Explorer 1" was the United States' first artificial satellite and was launched on January 31, 1958
Well, the Soviet Union put the first artificial satellite into space, the first dog into space, and the first human into space.
Boris. (The Russians called it "Sputnik" at the time.)
The first man made satellite was launched into space in 1957. It was put there by a consortium of Russian scientists. No specific person is credited with the invention of the first satellite.
NASA didn't even exist when the Russians put the first artificial satellite (Sputnik) into space
Sputnik 1 was the first man made satellite put into space. There were earlier attempts that failed. Sputnik 1, launched on October 4, 1957, was the first man-made object that stayed there, i.e. successfully achieved earth orbit.

The Russians put the first satellite into orbit named sputnik.
For about the first 15 years of space travel, almost all of the people who did it were men.
