The hues with the lightest inherent values are typically yellow and pink, while the hues with the darkest inherent values are typically black and deep blue. Light values convey brightness and vibrancy, while dark values convey depth and intensity.
All hues (colors) have an inherent value, or level brightness. Be aware that brighter looking colors do not always have higher values. Yellow and orange, for instance, appear very bright and warm to our eyes though they often fall at a rather low grey when you desaturate them. This is the inherent value. To illustrate this, make a color wheel in your favorite graphic program, then disable the color channels. Re-arrange the now colorless shades in order of brightness. You may be surprised when you re-enable the color channels as to which colors are truly brighter than the others.

The hues of the characters are defined by specifying the RGB (red, green, blue) values that create the desired color. Each color component can range from 0 to 255, indicating the intensity of that particular color in the final hue. Combining these values in different proportions produces a wide range of colors for characters.
There are six intermediate hues.

The different hues are the result of different wavelength of light. The height of the waves define the brightness. Red is not brighter than violet, for example, unless the red light is stronger, peaking higher than the violet's peaks.
