Lincoln's election win in 1860 on a ticket of no new slave-states. This meant the South would always be outvoted in Congress, which would pass laws favourable to the North.

So the South broke away from the USA, believing that it could live on its cotton wealth, and that in the event of a war, they could export cotton in exchange for war supplies.
