The Mayflower was important to the celebration of Thanksgiving, because it was the vehicle by which the Pilgrims arrived in the New World. They therefore brought that cultural inheritance of the harvest festival to the future state of Massachusetts.Massachusetts was the home of the Wampanoag Confederacy. One of the Wampanoag chiefs, Massassoit [c. 1581-1661], attended the first Thanksgiving celebrations. Massassoit's cultural legacy undoubtedly included some form of a harvest festival, which was practiced throughout all places and times.
