As a slave, Phillis Wheatley would likely have viewed the evening as the best time of each 24 hour period since as a slave, her days would have been spent in unrelenting labor while evenings would have been her time to rest and replenish. She is in essence thanking God for the beautiful evening.
Worshipped throughout Nubia and Egypt, his cult centers were Elephantine, Sunnu, Abu, and Semnut. He, like other ancient Egyptain gods, was worshipped by prayer, hymn, and feastivals (most likely at birth of children, and during the flood of the nile).

Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson requested this hymn to be sung the last time both men were able to worship together. This occurred just before Jackson was killed by one of Jackson's own scared sentries. The hymn was "How Firm A Foundation". After Jackson was killed, Lee stated that this was his favorite hymn. It was also the hymn that was sung at Lee's funeral.

They were good Catholics. They sang the Salve Regina. I don't know about sailors singing a hymn every night - perhaps they do - but the hymn "Eternal Father Strong to Save" is a hymn identified with the British Navy. If I remember correctly, the words are: Eternal Father strong to to save, Whose arms doth bind the restless wave, Who bidst the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep. Oh, hear us when we cry to thee, For those in peril on the sea. There are, of course, additional verses, but I can only recall the first one from memory.
The words of the hymn Cantate Domino come from Psalm 98. It is sung as part of evening prayer in the Anglican Church.

"An Hymn to the Evening" by Phillis Wheatley uses evening as a symbol of peace, rest, and contemplation. The poem portrays evening as a time for reflection and connecting with the divine, emphasizing the idea of closure and completion. The sunset serves as a metaphor for the end of life and the promise of spiritual renewal.
The book of Psalms was actually the 'song book' for the nation of Israel, and every 'Psalm' is actually a prayer, in the form of a song, written for the singers at the Temple.
Wheatley compares the human heart to a sunset.
