The Saxophone wasn't invented until the 1840s, which was after composers such as Mozart and Beethoven had already died. The instrumentation commonly used in orchestral music was pretty settled by then, so later composers continued writing for the instruments that were already there.
Yes the saxophone is the newest instrument to be added to the Woodwind section. I had to look this up for a Music test I needed.
Woodwinds
The saxophone is not part of the standard orchestra. However any composer or arranger might add one if he or she wishes. The British composer Ralph vaughan Williams used one or more on several occaisions.

A saxophone could be played the loudest. However in an orchestra the instruments are balanced in dynamics (volume at which music is played) by proportional numbers and skilled players. The least loudest woodwind instrument would be the flute.
Instruments are the things music is played with, for example, the piano is a musical instrument. There are also different families of Musical Instruments such as Woodwind (Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone), Brass (Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn), Percussion (Drums, Piano, Tambourine), and Strings (Violin, Viola, Bass Guitar) etc.
all kinds, but in different amounts and popularity. primarily woodwind and brass/woodwind bands and jazz bands.
It sometimes is used in orchestra, but is not as common as other woodwind instruments since it is a newer instrument. Much of the orchestra music that was written before the saxophone was invented. Therefore much classical music was not written with the saxophone in mind. Some arrangements have added in saxophones, but they are not as common. The woodwind family includes Clarinets, Oboes, Bassoons, Saxophones and several other instruments. There are sometimes pieces composed for orchestra and solo Sax. The sax has a rich, lively and very flexible sound in the hands of a master. You will find it in many settings as mentioned above, but you do not often find the sax in the older styles of orchestral music, even including some from the 20th century. The strongest sax voice is probably in jazz and more modern musical idioms.
the timbre of classical music? i was about to askthat as well! it consists of voices and instruments
Saxophone is best known as a jazz instrument, but it originated in military and concert bands, which are closer to classical music, and it is used in some orchestral music. Some famous orchestral pieces calling for saxophone are Ravel's Bolero and his orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Some classical composers have written solo concertos for saxophone with orchestra, including Glazunov and Ibert.
The saxophone repertoire is any music written for saxophone, or transcribed for saxophone. This makes this music specific to saxophone and therefore playable on saxophone. Popular classical saxophone repertoire includes such pieces as Concerto-Glazunov, Concertino da Camera-Ibert, Sonata-Creston, Scaramouche-Milhaud.
There are a few places where one can purchase woodwind musical instruments. This includes a local music store as well as online sites such as Amazon or eBay.
