Is England a monarchy?

Yes but we are now a constitutional monarchy, which means the powers the queen has are less than those of a full monarchy. England, as distinct from Scotland, Ireland and Wales, has been a monarchy since Edward the Confessor became king in 1042 (perhaps earlier but the area classed as England varied way back then). After the civil war and the execution of Charles 1st in 1649 England became a Republic, but invited Charles 2nd back to the throne and he was crownd 1661, all of England has been a constitutional monarchy until today, which means that the monarch is a titular head, with very little political power. The power rests with the people who elect members of parliament to represent the district in which they live, as the U.S. elect their Congressman in a similar forum.

What was the religion of Henry VIII?

Henry VIII was at one time a very celebrated Catholic, so much so that he was awarded the title "Defender of the Faith" by the pope for a tract he had done with support from St. Thomas More in defense of the Sacraments against the Protestants. However, Henry had a falling out with the Church, largely due to his desire to secure an annulment that he might remarry, for his current wife had not produced an heir. When the pope refused and St. Thomas More would not aid him, Henry began to take steps to gain political control over the Church. In the end, a complete break was enacted and Henry is ultimately credited with establishing the Church of England, or Anglicanism. Rejecting papal authority, the crown became the supreme temporal authority in religious matters. Along with this came the doctrinal and disciplinary changes that were influenced by Protestantism on the main continent. He was not a protestant, but he was anti-papal, which means he was against the supremacy of Rome. He called himself a good Catholic on several accounts, and he burned Protestants as heretics. However, he did not believe that the Pope was all powerful in terms of religion, and so he separated from the Church and made himself Supreme Head of the Church of England

Why did Henry VIII make the protestant church?

Henry would have had little time for Protestants. He was aware of a reformist movement in the English Catholic Church trying to introduce theoligical elements based on the new protestant doctrine. When Henry VIII came to the throne, he was a devout Catholic and defended the Church against them. Henry VIII did not agree with their views. In 1521, Pope Leo X honoured Henry VIII with the title "Defender of Faith', because of his support for the Roman Church. When the Pope refused to grant Henry VIII an annulment from Catherine of Aragon, Henry split the English Church from the Roman church. Rather than the pope, the king would be the spiritual head of the English church. Reformest elements in the English Church at that time gave him support.King Henry VIII declared himself supreme head of a new Church of England. (The Act of Supremacy). This marked the start of centuries or religious conflict in Britain. It is a common misconception, particularly amongst Americans, that Henry VIII became a "Protestant" and turned England overnight into a Protestant country.

Describe the steps by which England became a protestant country?

During the time King Henry VIII was trying to get rid of his wife, Catherine of Aragon, the Protestant Reformation was going on. Unable to obtain an annulment from the Pope, establishing Protestantism as the primary religion of England, and putting himself as the head of the church, worked to Henry's advantage. When his son, Edward, took the throne, Catholic holy icons, fancy dress and celebration of the saints were banned. When his sister, Mary came to the throne, however, Catholicism was restored, and Mary proceeded to deal harshly with the Protestants. When her sister, Elizabeth I ascended the throne, Protestantism was brought back, firmly establishing it, rather than Catholicism, as the religion of Britain.
