You have to remove the steering wheel ,lockplate, turn signal assembly and you will get to four bolts that are loose. Go to your local auto patrs store and tell them you need the special tool (lockplate removal tool and steering wheel puller)for GM steering colums.
How long does it take to remove a steering column on a 1989 Cadillac Deville
You have to remove your steering wheel. and then all other covers related to stopping you from getting to the four bolts that keep the tilt tight or you could have a broken bolt. but first things first you have to get to the bolts if not broken all you have to do is tighten them and you will be ready to roll. (there are four bolts)
I have a stering colum that is loose and feels like it will fall in my lap. What is going on and how do I fix it?
you must remove the steering column cover to gain access to the screws, they will be on the left side of the steering column, four of them in all. If you have a problem with the ignition switch being loose, to prevent it from happening again you should remove the screws and apply some " loc tite" to the threads. This is only true if the vehicle is equipped with a steering lock, all other models the switch is mounted on the bottom half of the steering column cover.
This should be done by a professional unless you are very mechanically enclined and have some specialty tools. Everything from the pivot point up needs to be removed to access the 4 inverted torx drive bolts that have come loose.
Are you looking to repair the loose bolts to tighten it up or remove it from the truck totally? Let me know i will help all I can.
yes
steering colm for 1989chev silverado
There are four bolts inside the column that have probably come loose and backed out. You must pull the steering wheel, turn signal assmebly etc until you get down to those bolts. Tighten them up, put it all back together and you should be good to go.
What it would cost to fix your steering column depends on what is wrong with it and you did not tell us. The tilt steering column in my 1989 GMC Suburban became loose in the tilt mechanism. I was quoted as much as $125.00 to fix it, but I shopped around and got it repaired for $60.00. Unless your steering column has the same problem that number is probably useless. I would suggest you call several shops and get a quite to fix it.
You can find a steering column. Diagram, for a 1989 GMC Jimmy, at most GMC dealerships. You can also find the diagram at most auto-parts stores.
This is not an easy task. Get a factory shop manual from AUTOBOOKSONLINE.COM . It is about the only book with steering column information like what you need.
