Communism as a political or economic philosophy was invented by Karl Marx, but he was not a political leader. The first political leader to create a communist state was Vladimir Ilych Lenin. His version of communism became known as Marxist-Leninism.

Sounds like a good PhD Thesis. Just kidding! The connection between religion and communism (or really any political/economic philosophy) begins when the ideals and abstractions of religious philosophy (and teachings) are applied to political theory. Many of the values taught by religions the world over are also shared by communists. Concern for the poor, equality, and a commitment to the general well being of others are some examples of values that may sometimes be shared between religious and communist persons. Noticing the correlation, some point to these values as indicators that communism is the natural political and economic system that must follow their moral philosophy.Of course, for whatever reason some people do not find communism a satisfactory ideology. These people will voraciously discount any connection between their religion and communism, and will instead follow the same line of reasoning to conclude that whatever competing philosophy they espouse is the only moral philosophy that can follow their particular religion. Yes, it is a crazy world.
Vladimir Lenin started the New Economic Policy in an attempt to improve the Soviet economy.

Socialism and communism are actually two distinct politico-economic systems - they both have their own political and economic systems. Marx also wrote the most systematic (at the time, and in my opinion, to date) critique of capitalism. In fact, I think its wrong to describe communism as a political system - democracy is the political system of communism - communism is fundamentally an economic system.
These are examples of economic and political ideologies.
