I think this engine uses a timing chain, but I am not 100% positive. Regardless, the noise you are hearing is either a timing chain that is loose or a belt. I would suspect that the timing chain is loose. Have this looked at ASAP.
It could also be the timing tensioner also.
1996 pontiac sunfire 2.2 crank was moved but cam was not could the timing get out 180 degrees before i put it back together
It sounds like the engine timing. The sound is coming from your engine valves. They're not in synch with the rest of your engine. It could also be that the valves are worn out. I'd check the timing first, then the seating on the valves.
Well it could be that your timing might be off if it didnt backfire before,i would get the timing checked or go back to where you got it done.
Yes, you could. Is it a good idea? Probably not. If the tensioner is worn so must be the chain.
It could be your alternator is going bad
Check Timing First Sounds Like That Is Your Problem. If it turns out to not be the ignition timing, it could also be the camshaft timing. If your camshaft is mistimed it means that your timing chain or timing belt has slipped and must be replaced.
Could possibly be a bad water pump. Get it checked by a mechanic. Check water pump first. if that's is not problem it sounds like your timing belt is worn and stretched and needs a new one.
Sounds like maybe the timing belt/timing chain broke or jumped. If it will not run at all, I'd guess broke.
Possible diff. bearings
depends on where the "squeaky sounds" are coming from. something could be loose, such as a hinge or something. if it screams like a banshee, then its the alternator belt, or the alternator itself. it all just depends on where its coming from
it could be coming from behind your timing cover, if so, it is the cam or crankshaft seals. it may also be an oil pan gasket.
You will know if your car has jumped timing by the way it starts up. If the engine is slow and sluggish, it could be a sign of jumped timing. Also listen out for strange noises coming from the engine or if it backfires, it is likely that there has been a change in the timing sequence.
