Good question (am looking into this myself).

You can fly from Sydney to Santiago Chile (Via Auckland) with Qantas. From there you can fly to Sao Paulo with a South American carrier (i.e. tam.com.br). This seems to be a lot cheaper & quicker than flying via the EU or US (would expect 36+ hrs).

Sydney to Auckland is about 3.5 hrs

Auckland to Santiago is about 11.5 hrs

Santiago to Sao Paulo is about 4 hrs
