Notepad files aren't something that just pop up on your system. You have to make them through the program called Notepad, which can be found at Start>All Programs>Accessories>Notepad. Once you have made the notepad document, you can save it somewhere on the computer, and then it is an editable Notepad file.
Click Start > All Programs > Accessories. Right-click notepad, put your cursor over 'send to', and select 'send to desktop'. That will place a short-cut on the desktop (your notepad program stays where it is). This instruction works for any program.
Off the Start menu you have Programs and then Accessories. That is where they are. The actual programs are in the Windows folder. You can also access the "RUN" command and type in "Calc" for the calculator and select "OK", "WINWORD" to open the office word application or "WORDPAD" for the defalut text application
