To genetically modify a plant, scientists insert foreign DNA into plant cells. This is not a perfectly efficient process and results in some cells not taking up the foreign DNA. Generally, foreign DNA is attached to an extra piece of DNA called the marker DNA which is used to select only those cells that have accepted the foreign DNA.
