France regained Alsace and Lorraine from Germany after world war one. They had lost these territories to Germany during the Franco Persian War.
Germany annexed the previously-independent countries of Baden, Bavaria, Württemberg, and Hesse-Darmstadt. Germany also annexed the French territories of Alsace and Lorraine which Germany renamed as Elsaß-Lothringen.
Napoleon III of France was forced to give up the territory of ALSACE-LORRAINE (in German - Elsass-Lohringen) to the new German Empire.
The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to accept full responsibility for World War One, even though it only entered the war due to its alliance with Austria-Hungary. The decision was made to have the treaty be signed at Versailles so that it would symbolically undo the Treaty of Versailles that had been signed at the end of the Franco-Prussian War of 1871. At the end of that war, France had lost and had been forced to pay reparations and give up territory to Germany, and the French desire for revenge for both the Franco-Prussian War AND World War One motivated negotiations at the 1917 peace conference.

The saar coal region was Germany's leading source of income and by losing this Germany had to make the price of daily necessities very high.
