It could look like that, because of its bigger population and industrial advantages.
But there were many moments when the South looked like winning, especially when it came to the General Election of 1864, which Lincoln privately thought he would lose.
If that had happened, the new President McLellan would probably have negotiated a peace that could only have meant Southern independence.
