i have had this problem more than once with a couple different cars (1986 Nissan 300ZX turbo w/ automatic, 1972 Volkswagen beetle w/ 4spd Manuel) the bug had a twisted shaft in the linkage. My 300zx had a broken tranny mount and because of the unnatural movement resulting from that, as well as my own ignorance and attempting to just force it into gear i bent the shifter handle its self. So when i would have my car in park it showed it being in drive reverse was where it said second gear and to put it in drive i had to cut up the plastic cover around the shifter. i hope my story helps you find whats causing your car troubles, oh and i ended up replacing the motor and tranny mounts along with the shifting lever.
Your transmission is gone, you need to rebuild it.
could be either transmission shift linkage not engaging reverse ( stops at neutral ) worn joint connectors sometimes cause this. or reverse clutches or gears bad inside transmission.
your problem is the transmission. you need to replace the transmission
A reverse idler gear in a manual transmission. It converts the reverse gears turning direction into the outputshaft to reverse its direction. The transmission can not spin clockwise when the reverse idler is engaged thus it only spins backwards not forward.
if you feel or hear it engage when put in reverse but will not move or even roll down the drive way. But rolls fine in neutral. a clutch pack is engaged that should not be.
I have the same problem with my 92 Mazda 626, have Not found a solution yet.
It can always be fixed. What that consists of.. it would help to know your transmission a little better, i.e., whether it's a manual or automatic, as well as if it goes into neutral (and park, if applicable). Diagnosing from a distance, unfortunately, prohibits a tech from being able to see the problem and diagnose it firsthand.
The A4LD transmission is the weakest part of the 91-94 explorer. It is likely that your transmission has failed.
Needs internal transmission repairs. Find a good shop.
If your Pontiac runs a 700r4 gm transmission you have stripped a reverse input shell. The transmission needs to come out for repair.
First thing i would be checking is does the transmission have the rite amount of oil in it.It could be as worse as a snapped transmission converter that goes into the pump on the transmission.(need to take step by step)
