A treaty in 1494 between the Crown of Portugal and the Crown of Spain that split the world West of Europe in two divisions. The line was drawn at 2,193 kilometres West of the Cape Verde Islands (which were owned by Portugal at the time).
Anything to the East was under Portuguese jurisdiction, to the West was given to Spain.
This helped/had consequences for the later divisions of Brazil and Western Spanish South America.
