Trying to relieve the fuel pressure to replace 89 Ford Probe fuel filter per Hanes book it says to disconnect the fuel pump relay until the engine shuts off.Ok but can't disconnect the relay.?

I found out you don't have to relieve the pressure to replace the fuel filter. Only small amounts of fuel stay in the old filter, so when removing it, place in a plastic bag or other container. Mission accomplished. To relieve the fuel pressure all you have to do is remove the gas cap.

If you are trying to replace the fuel filter and need to relieve the pressure it is easier to find the impact switch located behind the passengers side kick panel and disconnect it. Then start the van and let it run out of gas naturally-then change fuel filter then reset switch and turn battery back on. Just did it on an E250 with no issues-

Best thing to do is take the car to a garage to have it done. Yes it will cost a bit (about $500) but it will save you all the head aches of trying to get the car up high enough to remove the fuel tank. If you want to do it yourself then follow this procedure. Drain fuel from tank. Relieve pressure from fuel system. Disconnect battery. Raise car and support safely. Disconnect filler tube from tank. Disconnect line going from tank to fuel filter. Disconnect fuel return line at braided hose. Disconnect vapor purge line at front of tank. Lower exhaust from rubber hangers. Remove the heat shields. Disconnect the electrical connector going to sending unit. Support tank and remove bolts holding tank straps. Lower tank to disconnect wiring harness. Remove vent hose from sending unit. Disconnect vapor purge hose from vapor tube. Remove tank. Once out turn the lock ring counter clockwise (screw driver and hammer work best). Lift fuel pump sending unit out of tank. Slide pump up to remove from pulsator then down to remove. Reverse to install.
