they cause a disease called trypanosamiasis. it is an injection in the central nervous system. Tsetse flies give this to you when hey feed on blood. They are kind of like a mosquito, but if they bite you, you can die. So avoid them!

The causative agent of "sleeping sickness" is Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and also T. b. rhodesiense, which result in African trypanosomiasis (aka sleeping sickness). Sleeping sickness is spread by the tsetse fly, and if it helps any, the true taxonomic name for the tsetse fly is Glossina (species).

The tstse fly (aka tzetze fly or tik-tik fly) is a large biting fly that is indigenous to much of central Africa between the Sahara and Kalahari deserts. It lives up to its nomenclature as a "biting" fly by biting and feeding on the blood of just about any available vertebrate in the area. When it bites, any microorganisms that are present in its tstse can be transmitted to the blood of the animal it bites. There are two main ways this occurs:

1) Mechanical transmission - in this case, the fly bites an infected host and gets some blood that contains a pathogen. It may be interrupted during its feeding and go to another animal where it bites and some of the infected blood it just ingested gets regurgitated and mixes with the blood of the new animal - infecting it. This is much the way that mosquitoes tend to spread disease, i.e. mixing infected blood with uninfected blood in a new victim to infect the new victim.

2) Biological transmission - in this case, the tstse fly becomes infected from ingesting the blood of an infected host. The tstse fly has become relatively immune to several pathogens so they can multiply within its body without killing it. Usually the pathogens will actually go through some changes to adapt to the Biology of the tstse fly so the tstse fly is the only insect that can spread these specially adapted pathogens. Again - the infection is spread to the new host by the bite of the fly when the blood of the soon-to-be-infected animal (or person) mixes with the pathogen laced saliva of the fly as it feeds.
