refine edge command,button will appear when you make selection if you use cs4 or latterçor dodging and burning directly on mask.Hold down alt key while you clicking on mask this will place mask in your window working area,then choose Dodge or burn and look up for options to dodge or burn shadows,midtones or highlights.this can make gray lines on mask either white or black.you can try to make selections from channels,choose channel with most contrast on it,copy it and make new channel then change contrast to get better edges and try
