Here are two types of wave motion depending on the direction of wave propagation and the vibration of particles of the medium:

1.Transverse waves:

When the particles of a medium vibrate in a direction at right angles to the direction of propagation of the disturbance through the medium, the waves set up in the medium are called transverse waves.

2.Longitudinal waves:
When the particles of a medium vibrate in the direction of propagation of the disturbance through the medium, the waves set up in the medium are called longitudinal waves

There are five that i know and they are:-

  1. Longitudinal vs. Transverse

The two types of motion in mechanical waves (those requiring a physical medium) are longitudinal and transverse, the former moving in the direction of the wave motion, the latter perpendicular to it. One reason for transverse motion is the buildup of gravitational potential energy, such as water waves.

  2. Water Waves
  3. The energy of water waves is an oscillation between potential and kinetic energy. The potential energy of a water wave makes the wave drop. The kinetic energy pushes water sideways to bunch up into other wave peaks with stored potential energy. Electromagnetic Waves
  4. Electromagnetic waves are waves that require no medium. Their energy is delivered in packets of energy, as photons, with energy abiding by the equation E=hf, where f is the frequency of the wave and h is Planck's constant. Acoustic Waves
  5. Sound waves travel through air, water and solids. They arise from the sudden compression of a substance. Its loudness is measured by "intensity," the average rate per unit area at which energy is transmitted by the wave.
Earthquake wavesLastly, Earthquakes are a form of wave energy transmitted through bedrock. The strength of the waves' energy is measured with a device called a seismograph in terms of units on the Richter scale.

What are three types of a mechanical wave?

There are three general types of mechanical waves: – Transverse – particle motion is perpendicular to wave motion. – Longitudinal – particle motion is in the same direction as wave motion. – Combined – sea waves.

Is a transverse wave an example of an longitudinal wave?

No, they are different types of wave. Transverse waves vibrate across the direction of motion, like the waves you get when you shake a rope. Longitudinal waves vibrate back and forth along the direction of motion like a sound wave.

How does this motion relate to wave motion?

because motion is moving and wave motion has waves

What is a direction that a mechanical wave can displace its medium?

Both parallel and perpendicular to the motion of the wave at the same time/Perpendicular to the motion of the wave/Parallel to the motion of the wave - APEXPerpendicular to the motion of the wave.Parallel to the motion of the wave. Both parallel and pependicular to the motion of the wave at the same time.

What describes the motion of the media for a surface wave?

The motion is parallel to wave direction The motion is both parallel and perpendicular to wave direction. The motion is perpendicular to wave direction.

How does the motion of a wave change?

the motion of a wave changes when it moves

What is the difference between bulk motion and wave motion?

In Bulk Motion, the actual object is moving along in a wave formation. In Wave Motion, only the wave is moving, not the material . Picture a 'wave' at a ball game. The people move up and down but not from seat to seat. This is Wave Motion.

In a compressional wave the motion of the particle are parallel to the motion of the wave?

Yes

Which kind of wave is a water wave?

A wave in a body of water is a traveling transverse wave because the motion of the medium (water) is perpendicular to the motion of the wave.

When was Wave Motion - journal - created?

Wave Motion - journal - was created in 1979.

What do you call the motion of a wave?

A wave has cyclic motion - that is it repeats the motion many times, almost without variation.

What wave occur when the motion of medium wave is parallel to the direction of the wave?

amplitude Longitudinal waves occurs when the motion of the medium. This is parallel to the direction of the wave.
