Vietnam was simply the "shooting aspect" of the cold war.

It would be like two men arguing in a bar (this would be the cold war part), then they go outside and have a fist fight (this would be the Vietnam part).

Containment, or rather Eisenhower's Domino Theory which speculated that should Vietnam submit to Communism, then surrounding countries would also fall. Also, with the Truman Doctrine of 1947, the USA was bound inextricably to help countries trying to combat Communism.
