What is the third army in World War 2?

The "Third Army" usually denotes a field army. A number of countries have had a Third Army, including Germany. The German Third Army was disbanded in November 1939, only five weeks after the end of the Polish campaign, in which it took part. Since you asked this in the "Battle of the Bulge" category I am guessing you are asking about the Third US Army. A field army, such as the 3rd, has in it two or more Corps. Each Corps has in it two or more divisions. After the landings at Normandy in France in 1944, the Allied field armies from north to south were the Canadian First Army, British Second Army (together these were the 21st Army Group), the 9th, 1st, and 3rd US Armies (together these three were the 12th Army Group) and the 7th US Army and the French 1st Army (together these were the 6th Army Group). The German attack in the Ardennes Offensive ("Battle of the Bulge") hit the Allied line at the boundary of the US 9th and 1st Armies. The German attack broke through the Allied line. But the German plan was a desperate one, and for continued success depended on capturing enough Allied gasoline to keep the German tanks moving. The Third US Army was south of this breakthrough, aimed generally eastward toward the German border. At this time the 3rd Army consisted of the US VIII, XII and XX Corps. The commanding general of the US 3rd Army was General George S. Patton, Jr. He may have been the best US field army commander of the war. The Germans thought so, anyway. Within a day or two Patton halted his attacks eastward, reoriented his army to face northward, and attacked into the soutern flank of the German penetration. The goal may have been to cut off the Germans who had broken through, or to at least restore the Allied line and push the Germans back out, while relieving isolated units which continued to hold out, though surrounded by the Germans.

What is the history of the catapult?

History of CatapultsIn Europe, the first catapults appeared in later Greek times around 400 BC-300 BC. According to Roman engineer Heron of Alexandria, the first types derived from by the earlier gastraphtes ("Belly shooter"), constisting in camposite bow mounted trasversely on a stock. Biton attributes the creation of the first crewed catapult to one Zopyrus from Taranto, in soutern Italy.Early adopters of the catapult design were Dionysius of Syracuse (who called it katapeltikon) and Onomarchus of Phocis. Katapaltai are mentioned in the Siegecraft (Poliorktika) treatise of Aeneas Tacticus, from around 350 BC. It is probable that standard torsion-powered catapults entered in common use in Greek world and Macedon only around 330 BC. Alexander the Great introduced the idea of using them to provide cover on the battlefield in addition to using them during sieges. Projectiles included both arrows and (later) stones.Romans started to use catapults probably as booty from their wars against Syracuse, Macedon, Sparta and Aetolia (3rd-2nd century BC). Standard use of artillery (ballista and onager) is attested only from the time of Julius Caesar, however. In the Medieval times, when the trebuchet was introduced a relatively short time before the advent of gunpowder, the catapult became basically obsolete. Cannons soon replaced catapults as the standard siege weapon in Europe in the 14th century.During medieval times, catapults and related siege machines were the first weapons used for biological warfare. The carcasses of diseased animals and those who had perished from the Black Death or other diseases were loaded onto the catapult and then thrown over the castle's walls to infect those barricaded inside. There have even been recorded instances of beehives being catapulted over castle walls. The last large-scale military use of catapults was during the trench warfare of World War I. During the early stages of the war, catapults were used to throw hand grenades across no man's land into enemy trenches. At the present, in England, trebuchets are sometimes used by thrill-seekers as human catapults to experience being catapulted through the air. There has been at least one fatality, when the participant failed to land onto the safety net.newtest3

What year did Italy enter the war?

10 June 1940 Italy officially declared war against UK and France, already being a part of the pact with the other Axis powers since before 1939. There had already been a skirmish with Britain the day before. The occupation of Abessinia in 1935 and Albania in 1939 hand't led to involvement in further military conflict. Mussolini made Hitler wait a little with the invasion of Poland to be more ready for a great war, but Italy remained quite passive until France was attacked by Germany.AnswerThe Italians entered the war in 1940 as an ally of Germany. Their main aims were to expand their Mediterranean empire by fighting the British. AnswerWhen Mussolini saw how easily Germany was running over France and the allies in western Europe, he decided to declare war on the Allies and gain some easy spoils. When the Italians invaded soutern France, they were in for a rude shock. They were stopped cold. Only the capitulation of the French and the forming of the Vichy gov't stopped the Allies from going over onto the offensive. Mussolini was upset by his sad performance and decided to prove to the world that the Roman empire had resurfaced. He ordered his army in Tripoli to invade Egypt. They did well at the beginning, but the vastly outnumbered British stopped them. After this halt, the British went over to the offensive and regained all of their ground and started driving into Italian territory. At this point, Hitler dispatched Rommel at the head of the DAK. Italy dreamed of reclaiming the former glory of Rome and becoming a true world power. It's problem was that it's military was not capable of fighting and winning on it's own. July 12,1941
