Volvo Cars used diesel engines long before 1998, VAG engines were used from 1981-1986. Volkswagen Audi (VAG) engines where also used in 850, S70/V70, s80 and the second generation V70. The first diesel engine built by Volvo was the D5 which was presented in 2002. In 1979 Volvo purchased a precombustion engine from Volkswagen that came in two different displacements, 2 liter and 2.4 liter (D20 and D24)
