Northern Ireland was created as a distinct division of the United Kingdom on 3 May 1921 under the Government of Ireland Act 1920.
However it wasn't recognised as being officially separate from the rest of Ireland until the signing of the Anglo Irish Treaty on 6 December 1921, which set up what people refer to as Partition.
This came into effect one year later on 6th Dec 1922 and Northern Ireland opted out of joining the Irish Free State as the rest of Ireland was then known.
The Irish Free State became referred to as Eire as a result of the Constitution of Ireland in 1937 and fully became a Republic on 18 April 1949 .
